If you’re trying to figure out how to delete ChatGPT Library files and reclaim storage, start in Library and use the gear icon to open Storage so you can see what is using the most space. From there, you can filter Library items, delete what you no longer need, and permanently clear them from Trash. Sounds pretty straightforward, right? Not really, lol. While that is definitely part of the answer, actually clearing out a large ChatGPT Library can be a little more involved than it looks, especially with the brand new update. ChatGPT Library Storage Is Not the Same as Memory
Many people seem to get this confused, so before we dive into deleting your ChatGPT Library files to free storage, it’s important to know the difference between Storage and Memory. If your goal is to free file storage, ChatGPT Memory is a totally different feature. Storage shows gigabytes used plus file and image counts, while Memory is part of personalization. For instance, if you tell ChatGPT “remember this about my ecommerce shop” or “Hey, ChatGPT, remember to save all my documents as Word files”, that goes into ChatGPT Memory. You can always manage your Memory by going to Profile > Settings > Personalization, but changing or clearing Memory is not the same thing as deleting Library files. It will not help you free up storage space.
Before You Delete Files from ChatGPT Library
ChatGPT Library keeps the files and images you upload or create in one place, which is convenient until your storage starts filling up. Before deleting anything, it helps to know where ChatGPT shows your storage totals, where the trash files are located, and what actually counts toward your Library storage.
One important warning before you start, though. A lot of older tutorials are now outdated, and ChatGPT changes frequently — it literally changed while I was creating this tutorial. Older advice often told users to delete the conversation containing an image. But according to OpenAI’s current documentation, deleting a chat does not delete files saved to your ChatGPT Library. So if you’re following that older advice, it will no longer help you reclaim Library storage.
Check Your ChatGPT Storage Before You Delete Anything
If you are cleaning up because ChatGPT says your storage is full, the first thing you’ll want to check is the breakdown of what is using your storage. In the Library tab, click the gear icon in the upper-right corner and choose Storage. You can still reach the same Storage screen through ChatGPT Settings, but the Library shortcut is faster when you are already cleaning up files. This will give you the amount of storage used versus the amount your plan covers, the number of files along with how much space they are using, and the number of images along with how much space they are using.
At the start of my finished video walkthrough, the Storage screen showed 4.07 GB of 20 GB used. Of that, 615 MB came from 270 files, while 3.47 GB came from 4,575 images. That immediately showed me where most of my storage was going. The Storage screen is useful because it separates Files and Images. This is an easy detail to miss in the Library tab because it doesn’t show you these numbers, and it’s one of the most useful places to start. If one category is clearly larger, start there instead of randomly deleting things you may still need. In my case, images were eating the majority of my storage space.
What Does “Show Hidden Files” Mean in ChatGPT Library?
You may have noticed that the Library gear menu also includes a Show hidden files toggle. OpenAI’s current Library help documentation does not fully explain this new toggle. The same help page does say that a “Show all file types” option, when available, can include files whose names start with a period. Until OpenAI documents the new hidden-files control more clearly, I would not make assumptions about everything it includes. For this tutorial, I toggled the option on, even though the default setting was off. I didn’t see it as something I was using and didn’t see anything that showed up in my files as “hidden”.
Understanding the New ChatGPT Library Tabs
The current Library includes four main tabs: Suggested, Folders, Images, All. But it is good to note that they are not equally useful for cleanup.
Suggested is the best starting point I found for bulk cleanup. OpenAI has not documented how the Suggested tab decides what to surface, so I would not assume it means newest, most-used, or most important. For deletion, Suggested is useful because you can keep it in List view, filter the results, and bulk-select the items that have loaded.
Folders shows project-related folders in my account. In a test, I created a new ChatGPT Project, added an image to it, and a matching folder appeared in Library. You can open a folder to delete individual files inside it. This can be useful for some storage space clean-up as well if there are files you want deleted from your Projects.
Images gives you larger thumbnails in Grid view, which is useful for visual review, but I did not find a way to switch that tab to List view. That makes deleting large batches less convenient because you have to select each item one at a time. I, personally, wouldn’t delete from the Images tab because it would be too time-consuming. I would only use it if I wanted a closer look at the image.
All also supports List view, filtering, and batch deletion, but it can include project folders in the list. I didn’t like using the All tab just on the off chance I might delete a Project folder. It works, but Suggested is a cleaner route for this tutorial.
Use Filters Before You Bulk-Delete
In Suggested, click the Filter button to narrow the Library by source or file type. The filter button is three lines formed in a triangular shape. OpenAI currently documents filters for Uploaded or Generated files and for Images, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, and PDFs. This is a great way to separate files that you may want to delete, For instance, if you have a ton of PDFs you’ve created, you can filter to show only them and delete what you no longer need.
For this tutorial, Images were my biggest problem, so I filtered in the Suggested tab by Images. If you want to delete images in bulk, use Suggested > Filter > Images. This keeps the results in List view, which is much better for batch deletion than opening the dedicated Images tab that only offers the grid view.
How to Delete Files Inside a ChatGPT Library Folder
Before we get to the big batch deletion process for ChatGPT Library files, I wanted to point out how you can free up some space within Folders. As I said earlier, Folders are your Projects, and within those folders there are images and files. So if the file you want to remove is inside a project-related Library folder, open the Folders tab and click the folder name. That opens the folder so you can delete individual files inside it. Be careful with the checkbox beside a folder, though. In my testing, the checkbox selected the entire folder for deletion. If you only want to remove one or two files, click the folder name first and then delete files from inside the folder once it is open.
On a side note, Library items can also be moved into folders, so folders are useful for organization as well as project access. That is helpful, but it is secondary to the storage cleanup process covered here.
How to Delete Files from ChatGPT Library
From the Suggested tab, you can filter the Library and load the files you want. In this case, I filtered for Images. Use the checkbox beside Name to select the loaded group. A selection bar appears at the bottom of the page showing how many items are selected and giving you a Delete option.
You can also delete individual items instead of using the bulk checkbox, but for large storage clean-ups, the checkbox beside Name is the best option.
Why Select All Does Not Select Your Entire ChatGPT Library
This is one of the biggest quirks I found. The checkbox beside Name selects all files that have loaded into the current List view. It does not select every matching file saved to your account. That matters because it can make it look like you’re deleting more than you really are. After you click the checkbox, a pop-up appears at the bottom of the page. It shows how many files or images are currently selected. That number only includes items that have loaded on the screen so far.
Waiting by itself did not increase my selected count, either. I had to manually scroll down to trigger more files to load. The Library then loaded more items as I made my way down the page. During testing, the selected count started at 20. As I kept scrolling and reselecting, it increased to 580, then 640, and eventually 740. If you’re clearing a large Library, don’t click Select All as soon as the page opens. Scroll first, then make sure everything you want has actually loaded. Scroll down, let the next group load, and repeat until you have loaded the amount you actually want to delete.
What Was Labeled Recently Deleted is Now Named Trash
The current confirmation message still says the files will be moved to Recently Deleted and deleted permanently after 30 days. The navigation has changed, though. Now there is no tab or section that is labeled Recently Deleted like there was before. Instead, the place you actually open is now labeled Trash. This is located in the gear icon at the top right of the page.
The confirmation message also shows how much storage the selected file or files will free up if deleted permanently. This means you still haven’t freed any storage, a big factor many people overlook. Next, we’ll look at the Trash files, so we can completely clean these out.
How to Permanently Delete ChatGPT Library Files
From the main Library, click the gear icon and choose Trash to view your recently deleted files. Trash still uses scroll-triggered loading if you manually select files. In my test, Select All initially showed 20 deleted items, then 60 after I scrolled, and finally 80 once I had loaded the full batch. So the same warning applies here as it did in the Library tab- a manual Select All only covers what has loaded.
Use Empty Trash for a Full Cleanup
If you want to remove everything in Trash, the new Empty Trash button is the better option based on my testing. I didn’t notice this at first because it was tucked away on the right-hand side of the page. You don’t need to manually select the loaded files first by using this method, which means no waiting for a slow load! Quick note here, though- you do need to wait a few seconds or so to make sure everything has transferred from Library to Trash. If you do it too quickly, the files haven’t had time to transfer.
I tested both methods inside Trash. Manually selecting 80 files with the checkbox and then choosing Delete forever took almost 10 minutes. In a second test, I used Empty Trash without selecting anything first, and it cleared a batch of at least 70 files very quickly. That suggests Empty Trash may be more efficient for a full cleanup, although performance can vary. In my experience, using Empty Trash is the way I prefer.
ChatGPT warns that permanent deletion cannot be undone. OpenAI also says deleted Library files are scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, subject to limited security, legal, or de-identification exceptions.
Recheck Storage After You Empty Trash
The gear icon is not available inside the Trash screen. To check your storage again, return to the main Library and choose gear icon > Storage.
At the end of my finished video walkthrough, the Storage screen showed 3.97 GB of 20 GB used. Files were unchanged at 615 MB across 270 files, while Images dropped to 3.37 GB across 4,476 images.
That means the cleanup shown in the video reduced reported storage by about 0.10 GB and lowered the visible image count by 99. The important point is not the exact number of items in one batch; it is that the before-and-after Storage screen confirms the cleanup reduced Library storage.
